Seattle Psychodynamic Therapy For Childhood Trauma

There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you. - Maya Angelou

How Psychodynamic Therapy Helps With Childhood Trauma

Psychodynamic therapy explores how childhood events affect our current behaviors and relational patterns.

Childhood trauma can cause us to repress feelings that were difficult for us to handle when we were children.

We may not realize that these repressed feelings are still in our unconscious influencing how we relate to others in our present day relationships.

For example, painful unconscious feelings may cause us to have difficulty getting close to others because of past negative experiences.

Psychodynamic therapy brings our repressed feelings from our unconscious into our consciousness where they can be processed and healed.

It helps us understand why we feel the way we do by getting down to the root cause of our present day symptoms and emotional suffering.

The Therapist-Patient Relationship

In Psychodynamic therapy, we use our therapist-patient relationship to better understand how you relate to other people.

In therapy, your relational patterns will eventually manifest in our therapist-patient relationship.

This gives you the opportunity to become aware of your patterns and practice changing the unwanted ones in a safe space with your therapist.

For example, if you are normally withdrawn and don’t express your opinions, you can practice expressing how you feel with your therapist in a space that is non-threatening.
