Seattle Therapy For Childhood Trauma
“Childhood trauma does not come in one single package.” - Tirumalai S. Srivatsan
What is childhood trauma?
Childhood trauma refers to single or reoccurring events, that happened before the age of 18 and caused intense difficult feelings such as shame, anger, confusion and fear.
Many childhood traumatic events are scary, violent, or life threatening such as:
Physical, sexual, or verbal abuse
Witnessing a parent or sibling being abused
Parents divorcing
Death of a family member
Car accident
Having a family member who is incarcerated
Having a family member who struggled with substance abuse or mental illness.
Severe conflict between parents
Other traumatic events may not necessarily be violent or life threatening but can still cause intense feelings of distress such as:
Moving
Death of a pet
Loss of a friendship
Discrimination
Being bullied or teased
School transitions
Non-life-threatening injuries
Being rejected
Not being allowed to express your feelings
Having a parent who is overly critical, doesn’t respect your boundaries, or who lacks the ability to control their emotions.
All of these traumatic events can affect us and our relationships in adulthood.
